Cubic Odyssey
Voxel-based survival sandbox with procedurally generated planets.
Cubic Odyssey is a sandbox video game from developer Atypical Games and publisher Gaijin Network Ltd. Players explore a procedurally generated, voxel-based open world where they must survive and fight a spreading intergalactic threat called the Red Darkness. The game was first announced on February 25, 2025, and a free demo launched the day before, on February 24. It received positive reviews for both the demo and the full release, which came out on May 14, 2025, for Windows, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
The game is a 3D action-adventure sandbox set across star systems with procedurally generated planets made of destructible and placeable voxel blocks. Players can terraform landscapes, build structures, and collect items by mining, looting, or crafting. Vehicles like starships help with travel on and between planets. Alien life includes intelligent species with their own cities and factions, who may be friendly or hostile. Skills and abilities can be upgraded, and new crafting recipes unlocked as the player progresses. Unlike many survival games, the player doesn't need food or water; instead, batteries power certain items, and new ones can be looted or crafted.
Three game modes are available. Survival mode tasks players with stopping the Red Darkness infection from destroying wildlife across galaxies. Creative mode gives unlimited blocks and resources for unrestricted building. Adventure mode drops the player on an unknown planet to make progress from scratch. The game supports single-player and cooperative multiplayer, both locally and online.
Development originally aimed for an MMO, but the team scaled it back to a single-player focus. Game director Andrei Lopata told GamesRadar+ that after realistically assessing their team size and budget, they chose to deliver a strong, polished core experience first, describing the vision as a mix of heroic adventure, exploration, and survival. The announcement on February 25, 2025, included a trailer and a free demo on Steam during Steam Next Fest. The full game launched on May 14.
After release, Atypical Games published a roadmap promising new content, co-op improvements, terrain generation tweaks, and dedicated server support. Version 1.0.2 in July 2025 improved cooperative play. An update in September added map seeds for adventure mode, and dedicated server hosting arrived in October.
